What’s Wrong With My Oil Filtration

What’s Wrong With My Oil Filtration?

Oil filtration is a critical part of any engine or piece of machinery. Oil helps your moving parts maintain their full range of motion without friction or catching. Oil is an important lubricant in your system, and a natural part of its cycle is to pick up contaminants and debris.

Unfortunately, if your oil doesn’t filter properly those contaminants and debris can cause serious problems for your engine. Do you know if your oil is being filtered properly? How would you know if it wasn’t? What would happen to your business if you were suddenly faced with a grinding halt of your engine or machinery?

Davidson Sales & Engineering is passionate about helping all kinds of businesses meet their engineering needs with creative and custom solutions. We understand what systems need to function inside and out, including the critical feature of oil filtration.

Oil filtration is often overlooked but can cause major problems if not operating as designed. Today we’re sharing what we’ve learned about oil filtration problems and how you can identify them in your own engines and machinery.

Common Problems with Oil Filtration

Oil can readily pick up debris and contaminants, which is in part it’s a critical job in the engine since those contaminants could cause deterioration and increased friction. Oil is also designed to lubricate the moving parts of your engine to decrease friction and allow full range of motion. Friction can cause increased heat, combustion, damage, and serious danger. You need adequate oil in your system, as well as oil that is clean and filtered. But what happens when that oil isn’t clean and filtered?

  1. Overheating. The first and most common symptom of filtration issues is overheating. Friction will create overheating that can be easily attributed to the weather or overuse, but the real cause of filtration issues is much more sinister. Watch for overheating and shutting down from your engine or machinery.
  2. Fumes. Have you noticed any strong smells? They can smell like a burning fume, metallic odors, or strong smells of oil or gasoline. Pay close attention to fumes or smells you’re noticing, as they can indicate contaminated oil clogging up your system.
  3. Sounds. Are you hearing clanging or grinding? Some machinery systems may emit sounds of knocking or tapping. It can sound like something is loose when in reality is the friction of parts moving against one another without proper lubrication.
  4. Inefficiency. We often hear from business owners that their engines or operations are not working as efficiently as they have in the past. They’re looking for better output and productivity and trying to figure out how to get there. Our first check is for the oil filtration since improperly filtered oil will make your engine work a lot harder just to run normally, meaning it costs you energy and output because your oil filtration isn’t working.

So what do you do? You call Davidson Sales & Engineering for a newer, better oil filtration system to keep you up and running.
